Tips for Presentions to Personnel in School Settings

• Arrange trainings through the school administration •

• Whenever possible, train faculty/staff prior to training youth •

• Publicly acknowledge the support and work that faculty/staff are already doing•
(Many are already over-extendended and have too little time)

• Let faculty/staff know that being aware of what steps to take steps can make their job easier •
(e.g., in a suicidal crisis, they will save time by knowing who to contact and what to do instead of running in circles trying uncertain options).

• Acknowledge our belief that they care about their students and that they are in a unique position to make a difference •

• Recognize them as the experts regarding their students and that we are offering them a tool to help their students who may be in a suicidal crisis •

• Be aware that suicide is a frightening topic for many individuals, including teachers •

• Ask for and listen to their observations of what is happening with their young people •

•Reinforce that they are not expected to be professional counselors in order to apply the principles of QPR•
(e.g., anymore than a person needs to be a cardiologist to do CPR)

• Remind them that the skills learned in QPR may also be used with family members, friends, co-workers, and etc. •

•Acknowledge that none of us is exempt from the possibility of depression and/or suicide •
