What
Does the Bible Say About Suicide? For all the years I have been a suicidologist, I have wondered what the Bible says about suicide. Now I know. Thanks to Dr. James T. Clemons' thoughtful and scholarly analysis of the ancient scriptures in his book (cleverly titled), What Does the Bible Say About Suicide? I feel I am on much firmer ground as a QPR trainer when fielding questions from audiences. Perhaps, like others, I have taught QPR to religious organizations, convocations of pastors, Bible study groups and from the pulpits of a variety of churches. Until now I have felt a bit uncertain of the scriptural territory.
Dr. Clemons, in the mode of Lewis and Clark, now provides an excellent map to this territory, complete with references, signposts, and a compass. His careful analysis of those unequivocal examples of self-destruction described in the bible are carefully set in the historical and cultural contexts in which they occurred. The probable meanings of these deaths to those left behind is also addressed.
For those of us hoping to fully understand suicidal
behavior in the largely Judeo-Christian world here in North America, knowing
that the Bible does not condemn suicide is critical to helping break down
the stigma, fear and ignorance that surrounds and impedes our efforts to
prevent suicide. Well written, clear and a good read from cover to cover,
I cannot recommend What Does the Bible Say About Suicide? too highly.
