In this issue: QPR goes to college, QPR Theory paper posted, updated materials, research and more... |
|
By the close of 2006 we had trained and certified our 3,008th QPR Gatekeeper Instructor. |
To test QPR in the classroom, the School of Social Work at Eastern Washington University has incorporated QPR Gatekeeper training into all social work assessment courses at the university. All 500+ social work students, on three campuses, must complete the QPR Online training, pass the quiz and bring their Certificate of Course Completion to class for program review, role-plays, Q&A, crisis response training and referral skills. Student response has been very positive. A support package of materials for professors wishing to adopt QPR training as a clinical lab or class assignment will soon be available on the Institute’s web site. The entire effort is fully supported by Eastern Washington University, our educational partner. |
International
News! Dr. Sergio Perez Barrero, a clinical psychiatrist at the
Department of Psychiatry in Granma, Cuba, Founder of the Suicidology Section
of the World Psychiatry Association and also Founder of World Suicidology
Net, has translated all QPR training materials into Spanish and has agreed
to join our faculty of trainers with the goal of introducing QPR to many
of the countries where he now trains. Argentina is first on the list.
Dr. Barrero consults with the World Health Organization and is the author
of seven books on suicide prevention.
Thanks to Dr. Sung Pil Yook and his wife Dr. Hysun Lee, all QPR materials have been translated into Korean and QPR is now being taught in a number of venues there. We were honored to give a workshop on QPR at Korea University in the summer of 2006 and help launch our collective efforts there. |

Research
The large, random clinical trial of QPR in Georgia has been completed
and major research papers are expected in 2007. If the results are as
expected (QPR training increases the rates of case detection) these findings
will provide strong support for our theory and work to date. QPR Gatekeeper training is also being evaluated on six university campuses in a major research project headed by Dr. Kerry Knox, University of Rochester. These institutions are: Harvard, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cornell, Princeton, Columbia and the University of Rochester. The QPR Gatekeeper training program is due to be listed as an evidence-based practice in early 2007. |

A new subscription option to the QPR Gatekeeper Online training through Eastern Washington University is now available to the public, thus allowing unlimited use and access to organizational members or employers. A web-based support package is available to subscribing organizations and we hope QPR Instructors will take this opportunity to blend QPR Online with face-to-face sessions for Q&A, role-plays and crisis/referral review. Please visit our website for more information. QPR booklets and cards have been translated into Hmong. A Japanese translation is in process and targeted for use with Japanese students attending U.S. colleges and universities. Call the QPR Institute for more information if you are interested in these materials. This spring we will be producing a number of new videos, including updates to our foundation lecture series and QPR model role plays. Once edited and available you will be able to download these from our web site and use them in your training sessions. We will provide a number of these to choose from including examples of the “wrong way” to intervene as well as the “right way” to intervene. The Institute has partnered with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, Dr. Nancy Bohl of The Counseling Team International and Dell Hackett of the Law Enforcement Wellness Association to produce an introductory QPR video for police, firemen, EMTs and federal agents. This “emergency services” video is aimed at preventing suicide among the first responder community and those working in corrections. The Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, has agreed to provide the introduction. Again, this video will be made available to trainers everywhere at no cost. |
