QPR Gatekeeper Training - University Purchasing and Implementation
The QPR Institute is very interested in delivering and evaluating mass, saturation QPR training to large numbers of people living in defined populations, and especially on colleges and university campuses.
Survival rates for heart attacks are highest in cities where large numbers of persons know CPR and effect “bystander rescues” when acute distress symptoms are noted, even in strangers.
We believe survival rates for suicide crises can likewise be increased by training large numbers of gatekeepers living, working, and studying on a college or university campus. Enhanced surveillance leads to increased detection, intervention, and the implementation of risk mitigation strategies.
With 24/7 access via any broadband connection, we can now answer “yes” to the four “A questions” of any effective public health educational program:
Is the training Accessible?
Is it Available?
Is it Affordable?
Is it Adequate?
Why now?
- Online QPR training version 2.0 has been vetted by independent researchers to be equally effective to classroom training (link to Evidence for QPR – specific article)
- Because R&D costs are now buried, volume online QPR training is highly affordable
- User options for generic, African-American and Native-American versions are available
- User licenses can be distributed easily to all students, staff and faculty members sharing the same email domain name
- A learning management system to monitor and track learner experiences enables program managers to evaluate program outcomes
How does the online training work?
- Each learner is issued a unique user ID and password, delivered by email
- Each learner may access the training 24/7 for 3 years
- Passing a 15-item quiz enables the printing of a Certificate of Course Completion which bears the learner’s name
- To maintain skill retention and self-efficacy in conducting a QPR intervention, courtesy emails to review and/or retake the quiz are sent to learners at six weeks, 46 weeks, and 3 years
- Follow-up sessions for practice and role-play and Q&A are highly recommended and can be staff by existing counseling staff, some professors, or Certified QPR Instructors
What immediate impacts and actions can we expect from learners?*
- 15% of students said “yes” to the action item, “From what I just learned, I have decided to seek help for myself from the resources provided in this program.” (A free depression screening is provided via a link to the Mental Health America.)
- 29% of students said “yes” to the action item, “From what I just learned, I know someone who may need help and I intend to reach out to them now.”
- 17% of students say “yes” to the action item, “I have lost someone to suicide who was close to me, and I intend to learn more about the resources provided in this training.”
- 3% of students said “yes” to the action item, “During this training session I used the Help Now button and got help for myself or someone I know.” (A Help Now button is available to access immediate crisis resources.)
*(These data are from one student sample at a major university, N=201)
How can QPR be used on my campus?
- As required training for all resident advisors
- As training for campus clergy, security and administrative staff
- As part of freshman orientation
- As a class or lab assignment for students enrolled in psychology, social work, corrections, counseling, nursing or any of the helping professions. (QPR training has been used in Psych 101 courses with considerable success, and as lab assignment in schools of social work.)
Please note: Given the taboo and stigma associated with the word “suicide,” to achieve significant penetration of QPR training into any defined population requires a) a strong social marketing effort, and/or b) mandatory training. However, you can also expect the following evaluative response to the training (N=5,000+):
